Event: Roundtable Discussion

Wednesday 18th October 2023 at 6.30 - 8.30 pm GMT

YARD, 25 Rotton Park St, Birmingham B16 OAE

We are hosting a roundtable discussion in collaboration with YARD, Last Mafuba, co-founder of Inini - a Black-led mental health charity for asylum seekers and refugees, and Karen Dhlamini, counsellor, coach and Mental Health therapist for Inini

The discussion responds to the provocation, ‘How do we practise care for each other in the work of activism?'

This event is an opportunity for black activists, organisers and people who are doing radical work on the frontlines to discuss care, and all of the complexities that come with care within radical activism and movement building. As part of our approach to include marginalised voices within black organising spaces, the discussion will centre around black migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker experiences.

As part of the event, we will develop a 'solidarity map' for signposting resources and organisations, understanding what care looks like when working in solidarity with others, and providing self-care tips for activists.

Potential discussion topics;

    • Collective learning on the hostile environment and migrant justice.

    • Connecting migrant justice to international Black/Afrikan liberation struggles.

    • International human and people’s rights-based community education.

    • Afrikan law-as-resistance perspectives, community-lawyering and movement lawyering in supporting asylum seeking cases.

    • Repeating solidarity events of collective conversation and campaign  exchange.

The intention of this event is to curate a space for solidarity and joy, where all participants leave feeling resourced and well-connected to a movement for Black liberation.
